They think just because you haven't got a dad they can intimidate you and try and rip you off... and then ask for your bank details!

Just because you're a student doesn't mean you should be sleeping in a room with a broken window!

That depends on if he's given me my refund yet or not, as he owed me some money back.
Moral: don't sign up for rooms with complicated er, complicatedness. One flat rent - no extras, no fecking divisions, and just simple. Makes last year look like a breeze in that respect. We just had huge mice, dodgy electrics and flooding to deal with at the flat rate of £35/wk.

Was the word you were looking for "contract" by any chance?

Contracts aren't worth the paper they're printed on.

I think Rob meant "did you mean contract rather than complicatedness, when you said": Moral: don't sign up for rooms with complicated er, complicatedness.

As they own the properties, they should at least give an acceptable standard of living in return for the rent. And no, i don't know what you mean

Eurgh, there are some real horror stories about Chester landlords doing the rounds, as well as a certain rental company.
For example, we were looking at a house (high rent, bills not inc, poorly finished interior, etc but otherwise nice) and the landlord was such a jammy b*st*rd - he wouldn't commit to anything (ie: Us "that window's cracked, I'm assuming that'll be fixed when we move in?" Him "Oh, well we'll have to see how it goes [mumbles on about bills and timescale, etc]") and who would only allow us 15 minutes to look over the contract, sign it (without any other parties being able to look at it) and hand over the deposit in cash, as he had another group coming to look at the place after us and "they were very keen and will be bringing their deposits", apparently. Needless to say we got out of there asap.
Another one we signed with and were all ready to move in, when we heard that the girls who had moved in early (with permission and paying full rent) were being hassled almost daily about how much stuff they'd bought in (which wasn't a lot and certainly wasn't objectionable), landlord wanted to have access to their rooms at a moment's notice, still had the builders in (despite the fact that we were previously told they'd be finished months ago and we'd be able to move in, but then being told to postpone moving in for another month or so) and was generally shouting unprovoked unpleasantries at the girls who were living there. Thankfully we managed to get out of that contract with our money and find another (rather bloody ideal) place just round the corner.
Hope you're having better luck with your landlord now, Kim!

Yeah I been in a pretty decent flat for well over a year now. Our landlord works abroad so I mostly deal with his dad but they're amiable folks. I don't think they let the place for mucho profit so I don't get the greed vibe with them.
