Concorde2, a small club in Brighton responsible for putting on gigs and getting new local and not-so-local acts more coverage and a stronger fanbase, have released this press statement on their official site:
"Eh", thinks I. "no biggie".
Oh no no.
After reading just a handful of the responses to this on a message board (it's in "general" under the "concorde2" thread title) aimed at "the kids" from back home, I start to realise how much of an impact this is going to have.
What I'd like everyone to do is sign a petition which will show your support for the venue remaining a 14+ one.
Now, I know you're going to argue against the idea of a venue remaining 14+ whilst continuing to serve alcohol. There have been a number of points raised in the messageboards about whether it should continue to do this, and how important the profits obtained from alcohol sales are to the financial situation of the club. There has also been significant talk of Concorde2 becoming even stricter in the overseeing of its alcohol sales, even implementing wristbands which indicate to barstaff that the wearer is over 18, and these wristbands will only be given on production of valid ID.
So please, this is an issue I feel very strongly about, as it seems without the custom of the younger gig goers, Concorde2 may not stay afloat. It would be a shame to see such a venue sink, as this means that often the nearest place to go to for gigs is London, which is quite a way away. So I'm asking you to give up just a few minutes of your time to sign this petition, and maybe even to flick through the discussion currently going on in the relevant thread in this forum.
The beauty of the petition is that if you do feel strongly that a wristband or similar measure be undertaken, there is a section provided in which you're able to submit such comments.
Thankyou for your time, guys!
As you may be aware, all licensed premises are to have their licences renewed towards the end of November of this year.
Police have decided to renew our licence, but along side this, are refraining us from doing ‘14+’ events where alcohol is served in the bar area. We are told that at events where alcohol is to be served, ages 18+ only, will be allowed into the venue.
The police have an issue with the arrangement of young persons mixing with intoxicated adults & object to ‘mixed’ events on our premises. They say that the licensing objectives of ‘Prevention of Crime and Disorder’, ‘Public Safety’ & ‘The Protection of Children from Harm’ figure significantly in their decision.
Please contact our box office on 01273 673311 or via this email address if you think this may effect tickets you have bought for a forthcoming show at Concorde 2.
Thank you for your support & understanding in this matter.

- Many of the bands that play have at least one member under 18, meaning that such acts won't be able to play there. And seriously, some of these kids, even at age 12 or so, have a shoiteload of talent.
- Youthclubs just don't do events like this, and are certainly not able to bring such a diverse mix of bands and young talent to their small venues. The pull of a good name, like that of Concorde2, can often bring in bigger acts, like Son and Daughters, Sleater-Kinney, Hundred Reasons and other such acts, as well as DJs and other musical and dance acts.
- The reason Concorde2 is so popular with the under 18s is because they don't have anywhere else that they can go that brings such a mix of acts to their doorstep. Over 18s have pubs and clubs and other venues where live music is played on a regular basis. And, due to the nature of these places, they aren't allowed in as they serve alcohol.
