For my dissertation at uni I'm doing about rock guitarists in film - the way rock music is used in movies and the figure of the guitar hero in movies. There is very little written on this sort of thing, which is a pity for me, but anyway, I felt like talking about some of the best films that loosely fit this category... My favourite film ever I think is Top Secret! (1984). Val Kilmer plays an American rock musician visiting East Germany for the first time, and he gets caught up in silly stuff with the authorities and the resistance. His performances as a rock star are seriously hammed up, and the slapstick comedy isn't to everyone's taste but I like it. One scene I like is when Nick Rivers (Kilmer) is at a dinner and hears somebody announce they have a special guest. The speaker is actually talking about an opera singer, but Nick thinks it's his cue for a performance, and hands out sheet music to the orchestra, and swings off the chandaliers as he gives a hearty rendition of Tutti Fruitti. My my. Madness, utter madness and bloomin' good!

It's in the style of Naked Gun and Airplane! so it's not to everyone's taste, but if that's your bag then it is pretty decent.

The best musical I've ever seen was Cannibal- The Musical. Demented genius. Also try out Rock n Roll High School for a guitarist in a film. Its a Roger Corman cheapie with the Ramones.
