Stick your comments and recommendations on art films here.
I've recently been studying a whole unit on this stuff for film studies. Some of it bored me to tears, other stuff was quite thought provoking and interesting. Today, I saw a piece of video art, by Bill Viola (cool name). It was about the death of his mother and showed images of death, sleep, drowning, a toddler taking his first steps... it did not have music on it but there was so much going on with sounds and the images worked really well. If you ever have the opportunity to check this video film out, it is well worth a look.

i think the closest thing to an art film i've seen knowingly is the topic we're doing in Film at the moment - Pedro Almodovar. not really 'art', but close.

Aye, I've seen maybe three or four of his. He's not bad. Quite right though, technically it's not art film, but his directing is quite art-ful, lol. Which film did you see?

I've heard of that one, but not seen it. I expect High Heels, What Have I Done To Deserve This? and Matador were in your clips, or at least one of those. They are the one's I have seen.

I warn you What Have I... features teen prostitution and a lizard... but not together. ;D Oh and a policeman who cannot get it up... very well crafted film though, but Almodovar certainly has a sense of humour in his work.

Aye Run Lola Run is rather good... I would like to recommend today: Bill Viola He's currently the subject (along with Stephen Soderberg) of an essay I'm about to continue with (yes really). I have seen The Passing (1991) and it is quite different and arty but engaging and not pretensious and weird like a lot of other art films. He just uses different ways to tell something about life. In the case of The Passing it is about birth and death, and worry for the vulnerable people in his life, imo. Film buffs and people into arty stuff, esp. videoart may want to see if their college/local library has any books on him as the ones I've looked at have been an enjoyable read for once. I'd get one with pictures as it helps demonstrate a little, how some of his video films work. Bill Viola, it is worth noting, is also a popular artist in his own right and drew very large crowds when his video installations were shown in one of the London galleries.
